Interview with Joanna, Aesthetician and Founder of Skin Devotee Facial Studio

Joanna is the founder and esthetician of Skin Devotee Facial Studio in Philadelphia. She expertly combines her in-depth knowledge of skin chemistry, specialized techniques, and high-tech tools to create a unique blend of holistic and modern approaches to skincare.

Which skincare practices, according to you, are the foundation for well-aging?

"Lifestyle and self-care. You must fall in love with taking care of yourself, because if you don’t no one else will. Investing in yourself is the best decision you’ll ever make."

Form a long-term relationship with an experienced skincare professional. Well-aging is not a “one-and-done” deal. It’s continuous and evolving and it’s much easier when working with an expert whom you trust and who guides you on your journey.

How has your medical background informed your career as an esthetician?

My medical background has allowed me to approach skincare from a more scientific viewpoint, choosing evidence-based products and treatments. There’s a lot of hype, marketing, and pseudo-science in the beauty world and it’s not always easy to navigate through it, even as a professional. You have to think critically, be comfortable questioning and challenging what is often presented as fact, and look at evidence and research from all different angles. 
 

What skincare ‘mistakes’ do you often see your clients making?

1. Not cleansing well enough. 
2. Too much or not enough exfoliation. 
3. Both are game-changing when done correctly.

What is your biggest beauty learning since starting your business?

Self-care and human connection are more important than ever, post-Covid. 
Seeing the negative effects of lockdowns, the anxiety and loneliness that we all felt has made me appreciate what I do even more and has helped me to understand why I was called to this industry.
