7 Tips to Adapt Your Skincare in Your 30's and Beyond by Dr. Harper

Dr. Shahzadi Harper is an expert in Perimenopause and Menopause, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Premenstrual Stress disorder, Healthy Ageing, and Weight Management. She believes in the early management of symptoms of perimenopause and menopause to stay youthful and healthy. Swissline asked her what women can do past their 30s to accommodate natural skin changes that occur. Read on for her great advice.

What’s one thing you changed in your skincare from your 30s until now that you trust made a big difference?

These skin changes can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, sun exposure, smoking, and diet. While some of these changes are a natural part of the aging process and may not be preventable, there are steps that women can take to help maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin.

I would advise women as they age that their skincare routine should evolve to accommodate those changes.

1. Upgrade your sunscreen:  In your 20s, you may have relied on makeup with SPF or skipped sunscreen altogether. However, as you age, it becomes increasingly important to protect your skin from sun damage to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it every day.

2. Use a gentle cleanser:  In your 20s, you may have used a harsh cleanser to combat acne or oily skin. However, as you age, your skin becomes thinner and more delicate, so it's important to switch to a gentle, non-drying cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils.

3. Add antioxidants to your routine:  Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and green tea extract, can help protect your skin from environmental stressors that contribute to aging. Look for serums or moisturizers that contain antioxidants and incorporate them into your skincare routine.

4. Moisturize regularly:  As you age, your skin loses moisture and becomes drier. To combat this, use a hydrating moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.

5. Use retinoids: Retinoids, such as retinol, can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots by promoting cell turnover and collagen production. Start with a low concentration and gradually increase it as your skin adjusts.

6. Consider using eye cream: As you age, the delicate skin around your eyes becomes thinner and more prone to wrinkles and fine lines. Look for an eye cream that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides.

7. Don't forget about your neck and chest:  As you focus on your face, don't forget to extend your skincare routine to your neck and chest. These areas are also prone to aging and can benefit from sunscreen, moisturizer, and anti-aging ingredients.
